What is Special Olympics?
The vision of Eunice Kennedy
Shriver, Special Olympics was founded in 1968 on the belief that
individuals with mental retardation could participate and excel in a
variety of sports.
Today, Special Olympics is the world's largest program of sports
training and athletic competition open to any individual eight years or
older with mental retardation, regardless of ability.

Training For
Life
Special
Olympics Kansas (SOKS) encourages individuals with mental retardation to
leave the sidelines and discover the true meaning of courage,
determination and sportsmanship, both on and off the playing fields. |

Touching Lives
Special Olympics Kansas touches
the lives of more than 7,000 athletes, 1,400 coaches and 20,000
volunteers in communities throughout the state each year.

Focus On Ability
Since 1970,
Special Olympics Kansas has focused on the abilities, not the
disabilities, of every athlete.
Although the Kansas program includes individuals with mental
disabilities of all ages and levels, Special Olympics' programs allow
athletes to participate according to their physical abilities.
This means each athlete can safely participate and share in the spirit
of Special Olympics, while taking pride in their accomplishments.

|
Breaking the Barriers
Through Special Olympics
Kansas, many individuals with mental retardation are bravely facing
obstacles and breaking down barriers to become their personal best.
Day after day, while the athletes build muscles and sharpen motor
skills, they also build the self-confidence to believe in their
abilities and experience success.
|
|
The Mission
Special
Olympics Kansas offers every participant a chance to realize their
dreams by providing them with continuing opportunities to develop
physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in
the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes and their communities.
|
Catch the
Spirit
The goal of Special Olympics
Kansas is not to win, but to try....to experience, not to conquer.
No time is too slow, no distance too short to earn a ribbon, a hug, a
cheer or a smile.
|
|
A
Lifetime of Learning Through Sport
Everyday,
athletes gain more than just a chance to play a game or run a race; they
gain the chance to become a role model, a teacher, a friend and an
inspiration.
For the athletes of Special Olympics Kansas, the training never stops
and the benefits last a lifetime.
